Thursday Nights at Hannegan
Story by Valerie James, photos by Joe Broken
For years now Mount Baker Motorcycle Club has run a Thursday Night Motocross series at Hannegan
Speedway in Bellingham, Washington. Riders from all over the northwest corner of Washington and the
lower half of British Columbia start tuning up their bikes in early April getting ready to race.
Starting at about 2:00 o'clock on Thursday afternoon a steady stream of loaded down pickups and race
trailers start coming in the gates. Each week brings from 200 to 300 riders to the hard , rocky track. The
Expert classes are not usually large, but almost always exciting with such top riders as Ricky Albee and Cole
and Josh Jackson battling to the final straightaway.
Hannegan also offers quad racing which is usually competitive and well-attended. As with most other series,
the 250C class is the biggest and is often broken into separate motos. The track is also well-suited to
beginners, being shortened for the 50cc bikes and quads, so the 50cc classes consistently have 15 or more
riders. In my opinion, one of the most competitive groups at Hannegan are the 85cc and Supermini classes.
With talented young racers like Riley Dowd, Brady Johnson, Jake Sande, Brad Ludwigsen and Gerald
Sutherland, look for Hannegan to turn out more Northwest pros in years to come.
The grandstands offer a full view of 95% of the track and a beer garden for those who prefer watching to
riding. The concession stand is always open during racing and offers the usual track fare. And if you want a
mocha, there's a stand on the corner less than a block away. Most weeks Traxtor is there selling everything
from clutch levers to tear-offs and Andrew is always busy changing tires. One final cool feature about racing
at Hannegan is that Mike Byeman takes hundreds of photos each week and posts them on the website at
www.haneganspeedway.us, so every racer has a memento of their race.
Here are some numbers to watch for!
